What should you clean before moving in?
Prioritize kitchens, bathrooms, floors, closets, cabinet interiors, high-touch surfaces, and any area that will be covered by appliances or furniture. An empty home lets a cleaner reach the places a routine visit cannot.
Moving day already has enough friction: keys, elevator windows, utility switches, and the box that somehow contains every phone charger you own. A move-in clean gives you a clean baseline before that traffic starts. It is especially useful when the home has been vacant, recently renovated, or cleaned only to a basic turnover standard.
Move-in cleaning checklist: room by room
Kitchen
- Wipe cabinet shelves, drawers, handles, and the tops of cabinets.
- Clean the inside and outside of the refrigerator, oven, microwave, and dishwasher when included in the scope.
- Degrease the range hood and backsplash, then clean counters and sink fixtures.
- Vacuum crumbs from corners and toe-kicks before mopping the floor.
Bathrooms
- Scrub tubs, showers, grout lines, toilets, vanities, mirrors, and fixtures.
- Clean behind and around the toilet, under the vanity edge, and inside empty cabinets.
- Remove dust from exhaust-fan covers and wipe doors, switches, and handles.
Bedrooms, living rooms, and hallways
- Dust baseboards, door frames, trim, ledges, ceiling fans, and light fixtures.
- Vacuum closets, corners, stairs, and floor edges before the final floor clean.
- Wipe high-touch points such as doorknobs, railings, light switches, and thermostat controls.
Floors, windows, and overlooked spaces
- Vacuum or sweep first so loose grit does not turn into floor scratches during mopping.
- Clean window sills and accessible tracks if they are part of the quote.
- Check laundry rooms, utility closets, pantry shelves, and the space beside appliances.
When should you schedule a move-in clean?
The ideal window is after the previous occupants or contractors are finished and before your belongings arrive. If you are buying a home, ask when you will receive access and whether the property will be empty. If you are renting, confirm the landlord's handoff date and any cleaning standard in the lease.

How to make the appointment go smoothly
- Confirm the property is ready for cleaning, including construction dust, painting, and appliance installation.

- Ask what is included inside appliances, cabinets, closets, and windows.
- Give the cleaner a way to enter if you will not be present.
- Take quick photos of existing damage before the move, especially in a rental.
