Post-construction cleaning: the handoff between builder and cleaner
Schedule post-construction cleaning after the contractor and cleaner agree that the space is ready. Separate trade debris, unfinished work, dust removal and cleaning of new finishes. A final clean can be wasted if sanding or other dusty work resumes afterward.

Define what “ready for cleaning” means
Ask the builder which work remains and whether any trades need to return. Identify debris, protective coverings and materials that the builder will remove. The cleaner shouldn't have to decide whether a stack of trim is waste or a product waiting for installation.
Confirm that the space is safe to enter and that utilities, access and lighting are adequate for the agreed work. Hazardous dust or suspect materials require the appropriate specialist rather than an ordinary cleaning assumption.
Use a handoff checklist
| Builder or project contact | Cleaning company |
|---|---|
| Identifies unfinished tasks | Confirms cleaning scope and limits |
| Removes agreed construction debris | Identifies surfaces needing special methods |
| Supplies finish-care instructions | Confirms compatible products and tools |
| Provides safe access | Confirms staffing, duration and access needs |
| Resolves damage or defects | Documents concerns before cleaning |
Make the responsibilities explicit even when one company coordinates several trades.
Protect new finishes
Give the cleaner information about flooring, paint, stone, glass and fixtures. Newly applied coatings or sealants may have care restrictions. Ask the installer or manufacturer when cleaning is permitted and which methods are appropriate.
Don't assume a stronger chemical or abrasive method is the answer to every residue. If a substance can't be identified, pause and ask the responsible trade before risking the finish.
Decide whether the project needs stages
Some projects need an initial debris-related pass and a later final clean. If so, specify each visit and what happens between them. A single “post-construction cleaning” line may not cover repeated work after trades return.
At completion, walk the agreed areas with the cleaner. Record missed cleaning separately from damage or unfinished construction. Assign each issue to the right party so the cleaner isn't asked to repair a finish and the builder isn't sent a vague “still dirty” complaint.
Read the renovation-dust guide and post-construction checklist. Request a quote with the project stage, finishes and remaining work—not just the square footage.
